Genset Digest is a technical publication about diesel generating sets, industrial blowers and the standards that govern both. It is written for the people who have to make decisions about this equipment: the engineer writing a specification, the buyer comparing two quotations that look identical, and the maintenance technician who inherits whatever was installed.
It is not written for the end consumer, and it does not try to be. There is no attempt here to simplify a rating table into a slogan, because the rating table is the thing that decides whether a machine is right for a site.
What the seven sections cover
Diesel generator sets covers duty ratings, power bands and the engine platforms behind them, with a page for each of the main engine families. Industrial blowers and process air covers the cooling, dedusting and combustion air machines used in steel and power plants. Case studies collects installation profiles organised by equipment type, with international case studies covering export-market projects where climate and logistics reshape the brief.
Maintenance and operation guides carries the practical schedules and fault-finding pages. Certification and standards explains the documents and marks that follow a machine through its life. How pages are written
Three rules apply to everything published here. Figures are attributed to the standard, the engine family or the calculation they come from. Where a number depends on a condition, ambient temperature, altitude, fuel specification or load factor, that condition is written next to it, because that is exactly where disputes about a machine begin. And the manufacturer's own manual for a specific engine takes precedence over any general figure in these pages, which is stated explicitly wherever a planning figure appears.
Case studies are written as installation profiles by equipment and building type rather than as accounts of named projects. The requirement, what a hospital standby set has to satisfy, what a sinter plant cooling blower retrofit has to fit into, is the part that transfers between sites. The name of a site is not.
A figure such as 250 hours between oil changes, or a loss of 1 per cent of output per 100 metres of altitude, is a planning figure. It is useful for writing a specification and for sizing a first estimate. It is not a substitute for the engine manufacturer's published data for the specific model in front of you.
Subjects in scope
On the power side: engine platforms and their output bands, alternators and their matching, duty classes under ISO 8528, sizing and step load acceptance, enclosures and containerisation, installation constraints, and the whole maintenance schedule from commissioning to overhaul.
On the process air side: cooling blowers on rolling mill lines, dedusting fans in sintering and blast furnace plants, combustion air blowers for furnaces and stoves, and the sizing discipline common to all three, which is that a fan is selected against a system rather than against a duct.
Where to start reading
If you are specifying a machine, start with the sizing method, which turns a load list into a kVA figure with the starting margin and the derating corrections included. If you are comparing quotations, start with the duty class discussion in the generator set section and then read the explainer on OEM, assembler and distributor roles, because the answer to who actually built a set is rarely the badge on the door.
If you have inherited a machine that is already installed, the maintenance section is the place to begin, and specifically the load bank guide, because the pattern of monthly no-load exercise runs is the most common way a standby engine is quietly ruined.
